Remarque Print Exchange Update 1: Design and Method

My prints are in and entries will soon be posted online! While we wait, I thought I might share a bit more about my process. I started by assessing the parameters of the project. First and foremost, I needed to be certain that I was in adherence to the exchange guidelines. Then I had to think about what it would take for me to comply. The list looked something like this:

  • It must be something that reflects me as a person.

  • It must work well with an 8 x 10 format.

  • Each print must be as close to identical as possible.

  • It must not require expensive, specialized equipment (like a printing press).

  • It must be something I can actually achieve in the allotted time, considering my lack of expertise.

I opted to work with linoleum blocks and a single color. I had lots of ideas, but many were too complex. Fortunately, Canva has a photo editing feature called Tracer. It reduced my composition to the basic elements, making it much easier to determine which areas to carve. A little bit of transfer paper and voila! I was ready to carve.

One of the carving templates I created. I made five or six different designs.
