Anthotypes
When you work in an art school, you are bound to pick up a few tips and tricks. Prof. Lisa McCarty recently introduced her Eco-Photography class (and me) to anthotype printing.
The general concept is easy to understand. Plants contain a photosensitive chemical called chlorophyl. You can combine pulverized plant material (think leafy greens) with alcohol to make an inexpensive and safe emulsion for solar printing. It isn’t always fool-proof but that is okay. You still end up with a bit of aromatherapy, lovely green paper and perhaps some leftovers for a dinner salad.
